Well, the first annual 5K fun run is behind us. Records were shattered, dreams crushed, and the Mier vs. Ewell saga remains unsettled (Booo). November 19th, 2011 is a day that will live in infamy, when 200 walk/runners were collectively able to raise $30,000 for Swift Charities and Southwest Human Development. Do the math folks… (Please hold while I take my shoes off for long division assistance) that’s $150 per person with a registration fee of only $25 bucks! Let’s not forget, nearly 50 volunteers were on hand to will, cheer, and serve the participants in the grueling 75 degree weather. Some of which, ate donuts and drank coffee prior to 6 am in the parking lot… on their weekend off! Others showed up fashionably late, hair done, make-up applied and ready for the photo shoot, I mean race. (Ahem ahem… Ashley).
    Top Salespersons (fund-raisers)
    1. Renee “I know people” Hanes $2,207.12
    2. Joran “100 yard dash” Bean $1,272.00
    3. Michele “Bean bought second place” Burrell $1,261.00
    4. Andrew “IR” Mier $925.00
    5. Blair “The Trend Setter” Ewell $665.75

The top 5 fund-raisers totaled $6.330.87 or about 20%!!! Renee, where did the .12 cents come from???
On to the race! Here are the top finishers in no particular order (except that of their finishing place in the race, if and only if, this was not a “fun run”, in theory of course)
    1. Alex “Amy Maltagliati’s My Mom!” Maltagliati
    2. Randy “Is that it?” Gerke
    3. Jared “The Sleeper” Peck
    4. Justin “The Loan Shark” Fresques
    5. Kristin “I may have made a big mistake” Broberg
6-7. John “Photo” Liska and Frank “Finish” Larance
    8. Blair “My headphone cord tastes good” Ewell
    9. Peter “HR runs!” Chapin
    10. Unknown fast runner! Whew she was fast!

Take note of the only person to appear on both lists. A true competitor! I overheard him say “I only ran it to eat an extra turkey leg on Thanksgiving since Andy was out”, but we all know that leg was getting eaten anyway.

On a serious note, from all of us here at Swift Charities and Southwest Human Development, we would like to both congratulate and thank you for your involvement. It’s no secret that non-for-profits are struggling in the down turned economy, so your support and donations are as paramount as ever. We must all show our true character and integrity to help those in need, especially during the holiday season. We are defined by the choices we make when no one is around to see them. The wonderful thing about character and integrity, which are intimately related, is that they’re one of the few things in life that no one will ever be able to forcefully take away from you. Your choices are your own. Even if someone can take your life, they can’t force you to make a choice that you believe is wrong.

Mark your calendar for next year’s event on November, 17th 2012! It promises not to disappoint.

Wishing you and yours safe and happy holidays. Cheers!

That’s awesome! I didn’t know that Swift had a 5K run. Where is this year’s run going to take place? Is it open to drivers or is it more of a local thing? I live in IA and drive dedicated for P&G. I am training to participate in a marathon for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in October and am starting off from couch potato status!!! I started training in April and as of now can run a 5K, so this looks like a great time to me!!! :0)
